Without goals, therapy can start to feel like just talking, useful, but a little directionless. Goals give the process something to build toward.

The good news is that setting goals in therapy is far simpler than most people expect. You don't need to have your whole life mapped out, or know exactly what you want to fix before you begin. Here's how it usually works, and how to make it work for you.

How to Set Goals in Therapy

🎯 Start small and specific. Good therapy goals rarely sound like "fix everything". They're usually something focused, like managing one recurring source of stress, or feeling calmer in a particular situation. Smaller goals are easier to notice progress against, which helps you stay motivated
🤝 Build them together. Your therapist doesn't set goals for you, they help you shape them. It's a conversation, and it often develops as your therapist gets to know you better, so don't worry if the goals feel a bit rough at first
🔄 Revisit them over time. Goals aren't fixed forever. As you grow and change, it's completely normal for some goals to evolve, and for others to be replaced entirely. Checking in on them regularly keeps your sessions feeling relevant
🌱 Celebrate small wins. When you notice progress, even something minor, it's worth acknowledging. A slightly calmer reaction, a conversation that went better than expected, these small wins are what real change is actually built from
🧭 You don't need perfect clarity to begin. Even a rough idea of what you'd like to feel differently about is enough to start. Your therapist can help you turn that into something clearer

Why Consistency Matters Too

Goals give you direction, but consistency is what carries you there. Showing up regularly gives your therapist the continuity they need to understand your patterns, and gives you the space to actually practise what you're learning between sessions. Together, goals and consistency are what turn therapy into real, lasting change.
